How it works
Giving an item
- 1Post your item
Tap “Give an item”, upload up to six real photos, and add the name, category, size, condition and pickup district. Please mention any damage or missing parts.
- 2Wait for requests
People explain how they would use it, when they can collect it and whether they can move it themselves. Only you can see this.
- 3Choose who gets it
You decide who receives it. It is not first come, first served. Once you choose, the item shows as “Reserved” and other requests are put on hold.
- 4Arrange the handover
Agree on a time and place by message. After the handover, tap “Given”, and the receiver confirms it is done.
What if the handover falls through?
Tap “Reopen”. The item becomes available again and earlier requests go back to “Waiting”. Before choosing again, it is a good idea to check by message that the person still needs it. Whoever you choose gets an email.
Receiving an item
- 1Send a request
Log in, open the item and tap “Request this item”. Briefly explain how you would use it and when you can collect it. You never need to share your income or family situation.
- 2Wait for the result
Sending a request does not mean you will get the item. If the giver chooses you, you will get an email and a notice in Messages.
- 3Be on time
Agree on a time and place with the giver and turn up on time. If you cannot make it, let them know as early as possible.
- 4Confirm it is done
After you receive the item, tap “Received, all went well”. A quick thank-you to the giver goes a long way.
If my request was declined, could I still be chosen?
Yes. If the giver and the chosen person cannot complete the handover and the item is reopened, your request goes back to “Waiting”. If the giver chooses you, you will get an email. Please reply to say whether you still need it.
Item status
Open → Reserved (the giver has chosen someone) → Given (handover complete)
Large items (such as furniture)
- Givers, please note the size, weight, floor and whether there is a lift.
- The receiver arranges transport. The foundation does not offer collection or delivery at the moment.
- If home collection is needed, share the address by message only after you are matched, and consider having a family member or friend with you.
- Agree on the transport method and time before the handover to avoid last-minute cancellations.
Staying safe
- Meet in a busy public place in the daytime, such as outside the paid area of an MTR station or in a mall.
- Confirm the time, place and number of people by message before you go, and tell someone you trust.
- Items are free. Never pay a deposit or holding fee. If someone asks for money, report them.
- If you feel uneasy, you can leave at any time. If you are in immediate danger, call 999.
